DescriptionThis is Mount Osore, where Bodaiji temple is located and a traditional folk religion pilgrimage stop in Japan. It is located in the caldera of an active volcano. Japanese mythology says that Mount Osore (Osore-zan) is one of the gates to the underworld. Religious pilgrims and tourists are welcome to come see the temple, and are encouraged to be respective to others and the temple’s spiritual sanctity. People can also stay at the hot spring resort located there. Nearby there is a red bridge that crosses over the Sanzu River, with two statues that represent heaven and hell. It is said that if someone crosses the red bridge, they can see if they will go to heaven or hell. While the bridge has been closed for safety reasons, the view is absolutely heavenly.
